Should a patient with a suspected scaphoid fracture be treated with cast? An RCT’

DOI

The SUSPECT study is an open-labeled multicenter randomized controlled trial with non-inferiority design. A total of 180 adult patients with a clinically suspected scaphoid fracture and normal initial radiographs are randomized between two groups: 3 days supportive bandage or 14 days below-elbow cast. We aim to evaluate the functional outcome and cost-effectiveness of both treatments . The primary outcome is the difference in functional outcome after 3 months between both groups, assessed with the Quick Disability of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand score. Secondary outcomes include post-traumatic injuries, functional outcome, recovery of function, pain, patient satisfaction, quality of life and cost-effectiveness measured by medical consumption, absence from work or decreased productivity and quality of life.
