Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää Tampereen yliopistosta vuonna 1997 valmistuneiden työelämään sijoittumista. Vastaajilta tiedusteltiin tämänhetkistä työtilannetta, työssäolokuukausia yleensä sekä työssäolokuukausia koulutusta vastaavissa tehtävissä ja työttömyyskuukausien määrää ennen ensimmäistä työpaikkaa valmistumisen jälkeen. Lisäksi kysyttiin, olivatko he opiskeluaikana opiskelualaan liittyvissä töissä. Työssäolevilta vastaajilta kysyttiin nykyisen työnantajan tyyppiä, vastaako työ vaatimukseltaan yliopistollista tutkintoa ja päätyön luonnetta. Heiltä tiedusteltiin myös, mikä oli tärkein hakukanava työpaikan saamisessa, mitkä tekijät heidän mielestään vaikuttivat työpaikan saamiseen sekä mitä vastaajien työelämävalmiuksia heidän nykyinen työnantajansa arvostaa. Vastaajilta, jotka olivat valmistumisen jälkeen hakeneet töitä, kysyttiin mitä työnhakumenetelmiä he ovat käyttäneet eniten sekä mitkä tekijät ovat heidän mielestään vaikeuttaneet tai estäneet työllistymistä. Taustamuuttujina ovat koulutusala, tutkinto, tiedekunta, tutkinnon aloitusvuosi luokiteltuna ja sukupuoli.
The purpose of the survey was to chart the employment situation of those who had graduated from the University of Tampere in 1997. There were questions about the respondents' current employment, months of working in general, months of working in jobs commensurate with education received, and number of months the respondents had been unemployed before their first job after graduation. The respondents were also asked whether they had worked under the course of their studies in an area related with their field of studies. Those currently working were asked whether the demands of the present job were commensurate with a university degree. Moreover, the respondents were asked about the most important job seeking channel, factors which in their view affect landing a job, and what kinds of properties are valued by employers. The respondents who had sought jobs after graduation were asked what job seeking methods they had used, and what factors had impeded or rendered finding a job difficult in their minds. Background variables included the respondent's gender and information on the degree (faculty, field of study, and time of starting studies).
