Metal oxides(MO) are widely used in technological applications especially for catalysts and supports for catalysts. We propose to use the inelastic response of H2 adsorbed on well-characterized pure and metal (Pd, Au) decorated ZnO and MgO nanoparticles to probe the molecule metal and molecule MO interactions in a prototype study of catalysts that are used in the production of fine chemicals like H2O2. This proposal is the next phase of our study of the surface mediated chemical reactivity of pure and doped MO nanomaterials. We will extend and enhance the knowledge gained from our earlier published work on H2 dynamics on MgO, ZnO and Graphite to advance the current knowledge base of these important systems. We will combine Z contrast <1Å resolution STEM, state of the art ab initio DFT, thermodynamics and reaction kinetics, TGA and UV -VIS to complement this INS study.
