Ten manganese nodules from the Northeast Pacific Ocean have been sampled from box cores retrieved during R/V Valdivia campaign V13/1. Cross-sections for each of the nodules have been investigated on typical growth zones: OL (old laminated), OD (old dentritic), YL (young laminated) and YD (young dentritic). The nodules were dried at 100°C anf after cutting, samples of growth zones were taken by boring. The samples were then dissolved in 1:1 HCL and atomic absorption spectrophotometric analysis were peformed on the dried residuals.
From 1983 until 1989 NOAA-NCEI compiled the NOAA-MMS Marine Minerals Geochemical Database from journal articles, technical reports and unpublished sources from other institutions. At the time it was the most extended data compilation on ferromanganese deposits world wide. Initially published in a proprietary format incompatible with present day standards it was jointly decided by AWI and NOAA to transcribe this legacy data into PANGAEA. This transfer is augmented by a careful checking of the original sources when available and the encoding of ancillary information (sample description, method of analysis...) not present in the NOAA-MMS database. This dataset represents the digitized Tables 2-11 , pp. 84-93 of the related publication.
