Teatro Dimitri

DOI

Teatro Dimitri was founded in 1971 by “Clown” Dimitri and his wife, Gunda. It traditionally dedicates itself to the art of the Clown figure, as well as nonverbal and burlesque theatre. Nowadays, it unites the cultural tradition of its development with a modern and dynamic cultural offering. The focus of Teatro Dimitri’s work is the authenticity of a naturally grown place, excellence, and uniqueness, leading to the development of new perspectives. These aspects are represented in diverse shows featuring extraordinary regional and international artists. The program includes contemporary theatre, dance, music, theatre for families and children, as well as specifically themed festivals. All of these are complemented and supported by students and alumni of the Accademia Dimitri, one of Switzerland’s four theatre universities. The theatre aims not only to be a place for performing arts but also an inspiring space for encounters, allowing for the sharing of experiences and discussions. Teatro Dimitri also includes a restaurant. The summer of 1977 was crucial for the theatre’s founding: the director of the Berliner Festwochen asked Dimitri to create a piece for the following year, centered on the theme of the circus. Each graduate of the Scuola Teatro Dimitri’s first year participated in the play “Il clown è morto, evviva il clown,” resulting in great success, enabling the organization of an international tour. This way, the company was born.
