The aim of this survey was to collect information on the number and type of centres from which groups undertook outdoor education and recreation, and to determine the nature of the group's activity and the pattern of their visits.

Variables Centres: The central variables included the ownership and management of the centre, its period of operation, its staffing (both domestic and professional), the type of group it catered for; the activities that were based at the centre and the environments they used, particularly if these included the National Parks; map data on sites used. User: The user group were asked about the frequency, duration and destination of their countryside visits, the leadership of activities, the environments used and activities undertaken, why they visited particular sites, whether the frequency of this type of activity is likely to change; map data on sites used.
