Malgré de nombreux travaux partiels ou sectoriels, la structure des inégalités en Suisse ainsi que le système de stratification sociale restent mal connus. C'est pourquoi une large enquête a été organisée par l'Université de Lausanne (René Levy puis Olivier Guye, Institut d'anthropologie et de sociologie) et l'Institut de recherche sur l'environnement construit de l'EPFL (Dominiqe Joye puis Vincent Kaufmann). Cette enquête, réalisée en 1991 auprès de 2'030 personnes en Suisse a permis de faire le point sur la situation dans le travail, sur les différentes formes d'insertion, de la famille aux réseaux informels et associatifs, ainsi que sur les représentations actuelles des inégalités et de la société. Les questions sur la situation sociale des parents ont permis de reprendre le thème de la mobilité sociale dans une perspective comparative, mettant en parallèle la Suisse et les principaux pays occidentaux. En outre ce travail a permis de proposer de nouvelles catégories socioprofessionnelles à l'Office fédéral de la statistique et de les valider par rapport aux classifications existantes.
Despite a great number of partial or sectoral studies, the structure of inequalities in Switzerland and the system of social stratification remain poorly understood. This is why a large survey was organized by the University of Lausanne (René Levy and Olivier Guye, Institute of Anthropology and Sociology) and the Research Institute of the Built Environment at EPFL (Dominiqe Joye then Vincent Kaufmann). This survey, conducted in 1991 with 2'030 people in Switzerland, made it possible to assess the situation in the professional field, on the various forms of integration, from the family to the informal and associative networks, as well as on the current representations of inequalities and society. The questions on the social situation of parents made it possible to put the theme of social mobility in a comparative perspective, comparing Switzerland with the main Western countries. In addition, this work has made it possible to propose new socio-professional categories to the Federal Statistical Office and to validate them.
