METHODOLOGICAL INFORMATION

  1. Description of methods used for collection-generation of data: Powder X-ray diffraction. Transmission electron microscopy. Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Optical absorption spectroscopy. Photoluminescence spectroscopy. Cyclic voltammetry. Vienna ab-initio simulation package. Tight binding linear muffin-tin orbital atomic sphere approximation.

  2. Methods for processing the data: All experimental data were processed with common software such as Excel and Origin. Transmission electron microscopy images were processed using DigitalMicrograph 3.

  3. Instrument- or software- specific information needed to interpret the data: All experimental data were interpreted with common software such as Excel and Origin. Calculated structures were plotted using VESTA.

  4. Instruments, calibration and standards information: Powder X-ray diffractometer. Transmission electron microscope. Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer. Optical absorption spectrophotometer. Fluorometer. Potentiostat. Computer cluster.

  5. Environmental or experimental conditions: All syntheses were performed under dry nitrogen. All characterization measurements were performed under ambient conditions under air.

  6. Quality-assurance procedures performed on the data: All data were repeated at least twice in order to assure reproducibility.
