Abstract copyright UK Data Service and data collection copyright owner.

The purpose of this study was to investigate British viewers' reactions to the American television series Roots. Questionnaires about all six programmes were sent to the Viewing Panel, to be followed shortly after the series by a lengthy special questionnaire covering the series as a whole. This included a number of questions which had been asked in an American study by Professor Robinson of Cleveland State University in order to provide cross-cultural comparisons.
