Probing the magnetism at polar oxide NiO(111)/MgO(111) interfaces

DOI

We propose a PNR experiment to probe the interface magnetization which arises in polar NiO/MgO 111 orientated samples. High quality epitaxial samples have been prepared which show a mixed NiMnO interfacial region which has a ferromagnetic moment. DFT models show that this interface region is associated with spin and chemical disorder and is related to the stabilization of the polar interface. The presence of enhanced spin polarisation in these systems hints that these materials may have future applications in spintronic applications but a deeper understanding of the interface is required.
