Further studies of the ethanol-to-gasoline reaction

In our recent beamtime (RB 1820043 TOSCA and RB 1820044 MAPS), we prepared a series of ZSM5 samples that had undergone the ethanol-to-gasoline (ETG) reaction for different times and at different temperatures (200, 300 and 400C for 3 or 168 hours). There is no doubt that the spectra are completely dominated by ethanol. Either the accepted mechanism is misleading and only ethanol is present in any significant amount or we failed to remove excess ethanol at the end of the reaction. We will dry the existing samples under flowing He at elevated temperature for an extended period of time, while monitoring the effluent by mass spectroscopy, until the ethanol signal disappears. If the chemistry is dominated by ethanol, then its removal will leave bare zeolite, else it will reveal the material retained in the pores. Either result is novel.
