The proposal addreses the compounds PrPtAl and YbNiSn. Both systems are canted ferromagnets with both materials undergoing moment reorientation transitions as a function of magnetic field and temperature. The physics has similarities to ferromagnetic superconductors UCoGe and URhGe, however the stronger and sharper neutron magnetic cross-sections in PrPtAl and YbNiSn make them more attractive for experiment. The objective of this experiment is to map out the crystal fields. The results will then be compared to point charge model calculations, heat capacity, and magnetization with the goal of deriving the Steven¿s parameters and the ground state wavefunctions. Our main aim is to investigate the stability of the ferromagnetism when it is suppressed to zero temperature and disentangle various energy scales such as the kondo temperature and crystalline electric field.
