Comparison of meteorological observations and the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model output for a summer and a winter period in 2019/2020 on James Ross Island, Antarctic Peninsula

DOI

The datasets contain air temperature, wind speed and wind direction observations from automatic weather stations (AWS) in the northern part of James Ross Island, Antarctic Peninsula with corresponding values simulated by the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. The investigation covers two periods: one in austral winter 2019 (25 May to 5 June 2019) and the second in austral summer 2020 (5–20 January 2020). For both periods, observations from five (air temperature) and two (wind characteristics) AWS are provided together with the WRF model results utilizing three different boundary layer schemes. Data allows validation of model performance in a complex partly-glaciated terrain of the northern part of James Ross Island. The model was run in high horizontal resolution (700 m) and was forced by the ERA5 atmospheric reanalysis and the University in Bremen sea ice data. Further details on model configuration can be found in the Matějka et al. (2021) paper, doi: https://doi.org/10.3390/atmos12030360.
