Video footage of the benthos and accompanying oceanographic CTD data recorded along a transect at station 10-9 of RV Meteor cruise M179/2 in the Seno Almirantazgo / Isla Alta (Tierra del Fuego, Chile)

Underwater video recordings of the benthos and accompanying oceanographic CTD data of the environment recorded during 19 seabed transects (depth between 15-320 m) in the fjords and channels near the Strait of Magellan, the Beagle Channel and Cape Horn. The study areas cover a large part of south-western Tierra del Fuego.A custom-built observation frame (ROVOS), based on Ocean Module V8Sii ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) technology, was launched from the RV Meteor and towed along 100-500 m transects at an average velocity of 0.1 kn. The device was equipped with three cameras with different perspectives: One HD camera (Kongsberg oe14-502, 720p50) pointed isometrically forward, the second 4k camera (SubC Imaging Mk6, 2160p25) was oriented downward and an observation camera (Bowtech L3C-650-L, 240p24) provided a low resolution view forward. Environmental data was recorded with a CTD (RBR Maestro), which included chlorophyll a, turbidity, oxygen, pH and PAR sensors, in addition to standard conductivity, temperature and pressure instruments. Additional CTD data are available from water profiles (Schwalfenberg, in preparation). The position of the ROVOS was recorded with the ship's own Posidonia USBL. The global orientation with respect to magnetic north was determined with an internal IMU device. The video footage gives a comprehensive impression of the unique local cold-water ecology and particularly highlights the different composition of the prevailing communities at different depths and on changing substrates. Some of the 19 stations are repeated transects that were already carried out on a research trip in 1994 in order to analyse long-term developments.
