SUSTAIN explores the role of Spacemakers: parties that aim to contribute to systemic change by creating space for art in unusual places such as the economy, science, or technology. The goal: to work with art towards a sustainable and just society – ecologically, economically, and socially.
Through interviews and focus groups with several spacemakers, the SUSTAIN research has resulted in two main outcomes:
1) The Spacemaker Toolbox, a practical tool for Spacemakers to explore and professionalise their work internally.
2) The Spacemaker Stories, a series of cahiers in which we look at the Spacemaker practices from a distance, helping Spacemakers articulate more clearly what they do, why they do it, how they do it, and the value they create.
So, where The Spacemaker Toolbox focuses attention inward (strengthening the Spacemaker practice), the Spacemaker Stories consist of a collection of stories, reflections, experiences, images, concepts, and ideas that help give Spacemaking a place in the realisation of systemic transitions.
SUSTAIN onderzoekt de rol van Spacemakers: partijen die streven naar systeemverandering door ruimte te creëren voor kunst op ongebruikelijke plekken, zoals de economie, wetenschap of technologie. Het doel: samen met kunst werken aan een duurzame en rechtvaardige samenleving – ecologisch, economisch en sociaal.
Door middel van interviews en focusgroepen met verschillende Spacemakers heeft het SUSTAIN-onderzoek twee belangrijke resultaten opgeleverd:
1. De Spacemaker Toolbox, een praktisch hulpmiddel voor Spacemakers om hun werk intern te verkennen en te professionaliseren.
2. De Spacemaker Stories, een reeks cahiers waarin we de Spacemaker-praktijken van een afstand bekijken. Dit helpt Spacemakers om duidelijker te verwoorden wat ze doen, waarom ze het doen, hoe ze het doen en welke waarde ze creëren.
Waar de Spacemaker Toolbox de aandacht naar binnen richt (het versterken van de Spacemaker-praktijk), bestaan de Spacemaker Stories uit een verzameling verhalen, reflecties, ervaringen, beelden, concepten en ideeën die helpen om Spacemaking een plaats te geven in de realisatie van systeemtransities.
