Seafloor images of undisturbed and disturbed polymetallic nodule province seafloor collected during RV SONNE expeditions SO268/1+2

The scientific work during RV SONNE expeditions SO268/1+2 (17-02-2019 - 27-05-2019) was part of the second phase of the European collaborative JPI Oceans project MiningImpact and is designed to assess the environmental impacts of deep sea mining of polymetallic nodules in the Clarion Clipperton Fracture Zone (CCZ).. The main goal was to study the potential long-term ecological impact o anthropogenic disturbances on the deep-sea floor from mining polymetallic Mn-nodules.In this dataset, we present the raw image data collected by the RV SONNE integrated OFOS system.The OFOS is a towed underwater camera system equipped with both a high-resolution photo-camera (iSiTEC, CANON EOS 5D Mark III) and a high-definition video-camera (iSiTEC, Sony FCB-H11).The cameras are mounted on a steel frame (140L x 100W x 100H cm), together with two strobe lights (iSiTEC UW-Blitz 250, TTL driven), three laser pointers at a distance of 50 cm from each other that were used to estimate the size of seafloor structures, four LED lights, a Tritech Altimeter, and a USBL positioning system (Posidonia) to track the position of the OFOS during deployments.In total, 13 OFOS deployments were carried out during the cruise legs. The first deployment failed, and positioning was not operational during the second cruise. Here we present all images collected during the 12 successful deployments, with seafloor positions from the latter 11 dives also presented.
