We seek to explore extreme confinement on the vibrational density of states of polyethylene oxide (PEO) over a wide energy-transfer range (10-3000 cm-1). These experiments are motivated by preliminary TOSCA Xpress measurements on PEO confined in graphite oxide (GO). The INS data at lower energy transfers are characterized by the disappearance, shifting, and/or broadening of confined PEO bands compared to the bulk. We can rationalize these results on the basis of restricted PEO configurations within a GO 2D interlayer of 3.4 Å. Our working hypothesis is that the polymer is strongly adsorbed onto the GO layers via the formation of hydrogen bonds to GO hydroxyl groups. One way to clarify this conjecture is to measure the vibrational spectrum of PEO intercalated in GO as a function of GO composition. To this end, we request a total of 4 days of beamtime.
