Using the data, better forecasts of travel needs can be made and hence planning of all aspects of private and public transport can be undertaken with a greater certainty.

Main Topics: Variables Number of trips, number of stages, start time, finish time, origin, destination, land use of destination, method of travel, purpose of journey. Number of household members present/absent, aged above/below five years. Number of cars/motor cycles/scooters normally available to household. Total household income. Age, sex, household status, occupation, employment status, driving licence.

One-stage cluster sample

each county chose six clusters each of between 600 and 1000 households. 200 interviews were undertaken in two clusters each year
