Collective dynamics of barium crystal and liquid phases

DOI

We propose to measure the inelastic scattering S(Q,E) maps from barium in both the polycrystalline and liquid phases, based on the fact that there are intriguing similarities between measured excitation spectra from the liquid and polycrystalline phases of sodium and potassium measured by inelastic x-ray scattering. Performing an inelastic neutron scattering measurement at ISIS will give us a much richer data set than possible from x-ray scattering, including obtaining data at higher values of Q, and enable us to use our new analysis tools to relate the observations with the dynamics of local atomic arrangements. We expect this work coupled with the data from inelastic x-ray scattering to lead to nothing short of a revolution in how we understand the differences between liquid and crystalline phases.
