Structural characterization of a synthetic peptoid monomer

Peptoids are synthetic mimics of peptides (the natural building blocks of proteins) in which the side chain is attached to the backbone amide nitrogen instead of the central carbon. In recent years peptoids have been identified as attractive scaffolds for biological applications. They have been recognised as valuable tools to study biomolecular interactions and hold significant promise for therapeutic applications due to their enhanced stability and increased cellular permeability relative to peptides. An underlying theme in the majority of recent peptoid research is the connection between function and structure. In this proposal we will complete the first structural investigation of the peptoid monomer glutamine in water. An understanding of the solvation properties of the peptoid monomer may provide the necessary first step in building a molecular level framework for peptoids.
