Search for Antiferromagnetic order in ZrMn2

DOI

Today, about seventy years after Laves, there exists a fairly good knowledge about the basic structural principles of Laves phases but many questions still remain. AMn-type Laves phase compounds (A is usually a 3d or 4f element with a larger atomic radius than Mn) exhibit a large diversity of magnetic ground states.Although susceptibility indicates that ZrMn2 is highly frustrated, a recent preliminary MuSR investigation showed no evidence for frustration. A recent D7 experiment shows that ZrMn2 has strong antiferromagnetic correlations at low temperature and will probably order antiferromagnetically below 1K. Here we propose to measure muon spin relaxation below 1K in order to determine if ZrMn2 exhibits long range magnetic order.
