Short-range magnetic correlations in Er(Ni,Cu)Al

DOI

The intermetallic alloys RNiAl and RCuAl have been of high interest for several years. They crystallize in the hexagonal structure (ZrNiAl-type) and form various and complicated magnetic structures. When doping Ni with Cu (in RNi/1-x/Cu/x/Al series), in the region where x is close to 0.8 neutron diffraction shows no long range magnetic order, down to 1.6K. However, evidence of short range magnetic correlations is observed. Moreover, bulk measurements (magnetization, heat capacity) signify magnetic order. Therefore, we propose to use MuSR to probe the spin dynamics of Er(Ni,Cu)Al and request 5 days of beamtime.
