1D Spin-1/2 Chain Dispersion of Magnetoelectric CuO

DOI

We propose to measure the high energy magnetic dispersion of CuO. At high energies, CuO exhibits quasi-1D spin-1/2 chain magnetic behaviour. Our previous studies have revealed this behaviour but further work is needed to accurately map the complete dispersion. The results will be used together with our previous measurements on MERLIN to determine the key exchange interactions in CuO. These are required to test models of the high-temperature magneto-electric multiferroic behaviour which has recently been reported in CuO. We shall also investigate the crossover from 3D magnetic behaviour at low energies to the 1D spin chain behaviour at high energies.
