6 days on Nimrod are requested to collect neutron total scattering data of 1M, 2M and 3M solutions of a α,ω-dicarboxylic acid, glutaric acid, and 2-methylimidazole dissolved in methanol (for the pure compounds and an equimolar acid-base ratio). In the solid state glutaric acid and 2-methylimidazole crystallise to form a 1:1 salt, consisting of hydrogen bonded chains of glutarate molecules, cross-linked by hydrogen bonds from the 2-methylimidazolium cation. This experiment will study the formation of these hydrogen bonded networks from initial concentration (1M) up to supersaturation (3M) as would occur during slow evaporation crystallisation, thus enabling the deduction of preferred hydrogen bonding motifs in solution with methanol.
