Structural distortions and magnetic ordering in oxygen depleted spin ice

DOI

Geometrical frustration in the spin ice material Dy2Ti2O7 leads to macroscopic degeneracy and the observation of magnetic diffuse neutron scattering down to the lowest temperatures. The ice rule leads to the observation of three dimensional pinch points in the diffuse scattering, and magnetic monopoles emerge from this state. We have grown large single crystals of oxygen depleted Y2Ti2O7-delta and Dy2Ti2O7-delta, and the magnetic susceptibilities are radically different from their stoichiometric counterparts. The former allows us to focus on electronic changes to the Ti sublattice and the latter on changes to the rare earth sublattice. We now propose to study the oxygen vacancy ordering and associated structural distortions using neutron Laue diffraction and to measure the consequences on the three-dimensional magnetic diffuse neutron scattering pattern at T=0.7K using SXD at ISIS.
