The herbicides mesotrione and tembotrione have been observed to have short half-lives in soil. Furthermore, their partition coefficients (Kd and Koc) suggest limited soil mobility. However, in some instances, negative impacts have been observed on non-target crops rotated on to soils to which these compounds have been applied one year prior. It is hypothesised that this may be attributed to interaction of these compounds with clay inter-layers. We wish to investigate this using the hyphenated techniques of INS and Raman spectroscopies coupled with diffraction. INS looking at the organics, Raman mainly for clays and diffraction informing of the changes in interlayer spacings of the clays.
