Our recent X-ray and single crystal studies have shown that acrylamide can undergo different phase transformations depending on the pressure transmitting medium used i.e. whether acrylamide is soluble in the medium or not. The observation of different polymorphs, and therefore different environments around the molecules, can have a profound affect on the polymers produced through pressure-induced polymerisation and so we seek to understand the effects of pressure on these polymorphs in order to be able to understand and, in the future, control the process of polymerisation. Full structural refinement of these systems at sequential pressure points will allow us to have a better understanding of the process of pressure-induced polymerisation.
