Cylindrical snow and ice samples of radii 44 mm, 68 mm, 88 mm and a maximum height of 110 mm were taken from the field using a cylindrical drill and transported to the ship in an insulated container. We scanned the samples within 24 hours using a desktop cone-beam microCT90 set-up in a -15 degreeC cold laboratory. A global threshold of 0.21 was used throughout the analysis. This dataset provides complete analysis output, which includes profiles of density, specific surface area (SSA), anisotropy, event date, y position in the sample (where 0 mm represents the bottom of the sample), y position in the snowpit (where 0 mm represents the sea-ice surface) and relative_depth (where 1 represents the top of the snowpack and 0 represents the sea ice interface) listed in the final columns of the excel files.
The AIM files for this dataset are available on request (schneebeli@slf.ch), the ISQ files can be downloaded from the MCS portal (https://mosaic-portal.org/data/open-mcs/vessel/polarstern/sn_microct/sn_microct/).
