The Halda River is the one and the only natural carp breeding ground in Bangladesh. Labeo catla is one of the renowned and the fastest growing of major carps. The genome sequencing and assembly of Labeo catla will provide relevant information concerning their evolution, and also identify some important genes related to a particular trait such as those associated with body size or prolificacy.
