We request four days of beam time to conduct zero, transverse, and longitudinal field measurements on pyrochlore iridates A2Ir2O7 (A-227) with A = Yb, Y, Nd in the temperature range 200 K to 2 K and in fields from 0 to 0.4 T. Strong spin-orbit scattering, electronic correlations, and magnetic frustration may produce novel ground states in the A-227 system. We have recently observed an unusual magnetically frustrated state that competes with the magnetically ordered ground state, and appears to be stabilized reduction in Ir-Ir interactions via choice of A. We propose the above studies to characterize this phase. Additionally we have observed that the magnetically ordered ground state is different for Nd-227 compared to the other known magnetically ordered members of this family (A = Yb, Y, and Eu), and we propose to begin studies of Nd1-xYxIr2O7 to probe the crossover regime.
