We propose to explore the spin dynamics in LiNiVO4, a system which we believe is a previously unobserved realization of a random distribution of 1D antiferromagnetic Heisenberg S=1 loops or chains of different lengths. Due to the peculiar distribution of the Ni2+ (S=1) and Li+ (S=0) ions in the crystal, this manifestly 3D system is expected to consist of a collection of weakly-interacting quasi-1D loops and chains, realizing a novel concept of the ¿Haldane spaghetti¿ system. We propose to carry out a muon experiment on LiNiVO4 down to 50 mK in order to test whether or not it orders magnetically.
