Glycerol, a sugar alcohol with three hydroxyl groups, is a rich and complex system for the study of hydrogen bonded fluids and has been the subject of long-standing scientific interest. In particular, glycerol is well known for its ability to supercool into a glass and for its effectiveness as a cryoprotectant in biological and technological processes. However, little is known about the structural properties of this aqueous system and the organization of its hydrogen bonding properties in solution is yet to be elucidated. Initial experiments at ISIS have successfully characterised the structural properties of this important system under ambient conditions. We now propose to complete the first structural investigation of aqueous glycerol at low temperatures. Obtaining structural insight is a crucial first step in characterizing the molecular properties of this important aqueous system.
