Spin excitations in an alternating quantum spin chain

We propose to measure the magnetic excitations in malachite, a mineral that contains S=1/2 alternating chains with an alternation parameter of J'/J=0.5, just in the middle between the limiting cases of isolated dimers and isotropic Heisenberg chains, where standard hard-core boson models are expected to break down. The experiment aims at determining the main exchanges on the first fully deutered samples available.
