Magnetic skyrmions are nanometric topological vortex-like spin textures that appear in select materials and have lately attracted a lot of attention due to their numerous potential applications. Having recently demonstrated that muSR is a powerful method for studying skyrmion dynamics, we propose to use it to investigate the dynamics in the newly-discovered skyrmion phase in Gd2PdSi3, the first centrosymmetric skyrmion material. As skyrmions in Gd2PdSi3 arise from geometrical frustration, rather than from noncentrosymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, we expect a unique dynamical signature. This Rapid Access proposal will help elucidate the novel skyrmion-stabilising mechanism in Gd2PdSi3 and will complement our planned first-ever NMR study of skyrmions. As the first proposal by this PI it will kick-start his research, as he only recently moved to Durham on a short contract.
