16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing hypervariable region V4 for determining oily bilge wastewater microbiome composition in 4 distinct vessel samples in Mar del Plata, Argentina

Oily bilge wastewater is an important source of hydrocarbon contamination in the marine environment worldwide. We assessed the microbiome composition of oily bilge wastewater samples from 4 distinct vessels in Mar del Plata, Argentina to determine if there are common/unique bacterial types adapted to thrive in this harsh environment and if there have potential to biodegrade the major aliphatic pollutant fraction.
