Iron Knives and Swords from the Anglo-Saxon Cemetery at Watchfield, Oxfordshire

DOI

We propose to analyse 23 Early Medieval (ca. 6th century AD) iron knives and swords from the cemetery site at Watchfield, Oxon. The objects are in the care of Oxfordshire County Council. There is likely to be much local public interest in this research. We will carry out neutron diffraction analyses in order to: find the carbon content of preserved steel; estimate the phosphorus content of preserved ferrite; and measure the volume of corrosion minerals where the metal does not survive. We propose to make 3 measurements on each of the 18 knives: where possible, on blade, back, and tang. Ten points will be measured on the one complete Watchfield sword. We estimate 51 hours measurement time for 76 points, plus sample turn-over time. ENGIN-X provides a suitable sample-mounting environment for these fragile, irregularly shaped, irreplaceable artefacts. We request 3 days beamtime on ENGIN-X.
