In this experiment we will use the F-mu+-F state as a window into the dynamics of perfluoroalkanes and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) at the molecular level. We will investigate how the mass of the perfluoroalkane molecules (from C6F14 to C24F50) and the crystallinity of PTFE affect the low temperature solid-solid phase transition, where the F-mu+-F state disappears. The results will aid us considerably in understanding our low-energy muSR experiments on PTFE, where the F-mu+-F state for muons implanted within 200 nm of the surface disappeared 40 K below the bulk.
