The low genetic diversity within the crop plant Beta vulgaris (sugar beet) makes it necessary to incorporate new traits from its crop wild relatives to enhance its tolerance against adverse environmental influences. A detailed analysis of the complete plastome sequences from a broad spectrum of Betoideae species enabled a new, high-resolution determination of their phylogeny. Paired-end sequencing was performed on a HiSeq2000 (2x250 nt) for 18 closely related accessions of the Betoideae subfamily. High quality plastome assemblies were generated.
