Gaps in the spin wave dispersion relation in elemental iron

Iron is a canonical instance of an itinerant electron ferromagnet, and a classic correlated electron system. Our recent data from MAPS contradicts earlier triple-axis data that showed a large drop in intensity above ~100meV along the (100) direction, with reappearance of a sharp but weak mode only well above 200meV. We propose to map the dispersion relation with much better energy resolution in the range 80-200meV (1) to determine if evidence for a much narrower region of reduced intensity in our data of along (100) centred at ~130meV is real, (2) to definitively determine the absence or otherwise of the predicted 50meV gap along (110) centred at 150meV, and (3) make a bridge between the current MAPS data and earlier triple axis data. The data will give us the confidence to publish our conclusions.
