Klabauter is a dynamic theatre company that stands as a beacon of diversity in the world of performing arts. The ensemble, known for its innovative approach, crafts original productions and reimagines classic plays, resulting in unique and deeply moving performances that resonate with a broad audience. In addition to its compelling shows, the theatre actively engages in workshops, professional development programs, and public rehearsals, opening its doors to school classes and groups eager to explore its creative process. Furthermore, Klabauter collaborates with freelance artists and groups, offering its "off" stage as a venue for guest productions. It proudly holds the distinction of being one of Hamburg's eight off-mainstream stages. Klabauter is a partner in the TUSCH program Hamburg (Theater- und Schule, Theatre and School) and a valued contributor to the foundation Das Rauhe Haus.

The roots of this remarkable company trace back to 1993 when the project "Eisenhans" was initiated. It brought together individuals with and without disabilities, united by their passion for theater. Under the dedicated leadership of Astrid Eggers, this amateur drama group embarked on captivating productions that garnered recognition, including the prestigious Senator Neumann-Preis within a year of its inception. The success of this project not only fueled the desire of the participants to continue their theatrical journey but also solidified Eggers' belief that the unique expressive abilities of individuals with disabilities could thrive in the realm of professional theatre. This conviction eventually led to Klabauter becoming a beneficiary of Das Rauhe Haus (Hamburg) as part of its Individual Work Accompanying program.

On February 2nd, 1998, a pivotal chapter began with the initiation of training and rehearsals for six young people with disabilities under Eggers' expert guidance. This comprehensive program encompassed speech, gesture, mimics, movement training, and rigorous acting rehearsals. By 1999, the company had expanded to include 12 dedicated actors. In 2000, the Förderverein Theaterwerkstatt Klabauter e.V., a support association, was established to play a crucial role in fundraising, providing resources, and organizing transportation. To this day, this support association remains instrumental in facilitating Klabauter's operations. The funds raised have enabled the rental of theatre halls, acquisition of technical and artistic equipment, promotion of staged plays, and the development of an impressive online presence, positioning the theatre company on par with its peers. In a significant milestone in 2006, the company transformed parish rooms into its dedicated auditorium, allowing for regular evening performances. The stage was thoughtfully equipped with a ramp, ensuring accessibility for actors who use wheelchairs.
