The series was formerly known as <i>Industrial Stoppages Data</i> and was the responsibility of the Employment Department. The title changed to <i>Labour Disputes in the UK</i> in 1992 and the Office for National Statistics took over responsibility when the Employment Department was abolished in 1995.

The data base presents information on all recorded stoppages for the years 1985 to 1989. The information covers region, county, industry, public sector (all coded), MLH (SIC Group under the SIC Revised 1980), number of workers involved (both directly and indirectly),occupations involved, number of working days lost, the date started, ended and duration of the stoppage, cause of stoppage, sympathetic action, official or other, and the total number employed at the stoppage establishment by size bands (if known).
