Structure of Cellulose Nanofibril Gels

This proposal is part of a new project based on understanding the formation of gels in suspensions of partially oxidised cellulose nanofibrils with small amounts of salt or surfactant which are of interest as viscosity modifiers for aqueous formulations. Cellulose can be made from sustainable resources, is biodegradable and preliminary studies have suggested that gels formed from these fibrils have suitable rheological and sensory properties for use in personal care products. However the interactions causing gel formation in this system are not understood, and here we propose to begin initial studies on the structures formed in cellulose nanofibril suspensions in the presence and absence of salts, and low concentrations of surfactants. We aim to understand the interactions causing gel formation and the major variables which affect gel stability.
