Determining the Vibrational Frequencies and Lattice Dynamics in Nanoporous Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework (ZIF) Materials

DOI

This proposal will use Inelastic Neutron Scattering (INS) spectroscopy at TOSCA to establish the vibrational frequencies in nanoporous zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) materials. The objectives include:- (i) to examine the detailed vibrational spectra of five unique ZIF materials which feature distinct chemical structure, network topology, and pore configuration; (ii) to determine framework dynamical behaviour in the spectral range of ca. 100-500 cm-1, where the most interesting Zn-N stretch and bend modes have been projected, but not yet experimentally confirmed; (iii) to uncover the sources of collective vibrations and lattice modes below 100-1; (iv) to elucidate the evolution in ZIF¿s lattice dynamics at high temperature that causes elastic instability; and (v) to understand the physics driving the ¿gate-opening¿ phenomenon in ZIF 4.
