Quantum critical dynamics in the purely dipolar antiferromagnet LiErF4

DOI

LiErF4 is an example of an XY dipolar coupled antiferromagnet with planar anisotropy. As such it exhibits a quantum phase transition (QPT) in a small field of 4kOe, which is of a different class than that in the celebrated sister-compound LiHoF4. We have recently performed comprehensive characterization of the system, including full Hamiltonian, ordered structure, temeprature-field phase diagram, order parameter and specific heat critical exponents, and dispersion relations in zero and high magnetic field. Here we propose an inelastic neutron scattering experiment to 1) probe E/T scaling at the QPT, 2) quantify non-universal corrections away from the QPT, 3) Determine dimensionality and dynamical critical exponents for fluctuations at the thermal phase transition in zero field.
