An INS study of amorphous and crystalline nitric acid: observing the phase changes

DOI

Nitric acid plays important roles in the atmosphere, in all aggregate states and combined with water.During the last periode we were running the proposal RB1110207 "Metastable Water Ice and Nitric Acid - observing the phase changes". We were very successful in detecting the first INS spectrum of pure crystalline nitric acid (see our report). Unfortunately we were not able to record the spectrum of the amorphous pure nitric acid, which was also included in the mentioned proposal. This was due to the presence of nitric acid monohydrate impurity. We request time on TOSCA to measure the amorphous phase using a modified preparation procedure to ensure pure amorphous nitric acid.
