The diffusion of hydrocarbons relevant to the toluene hydrogenation reaction will be measured both as unconfined liquids and confined in the catalyst Pt/MCM-41. Diffusion will be measured at a number of temperatures. This work is part of a larger project where the kinetics pf toluene hydrogenation has been succesfully measured using neutron total scattering. Analysis of the temporal changes within this system indicated that the liquid re-organisation inside the pores was the slowest step of the reaction. The acquisition of further information about the dynamics could provide guidance on future catalyst design and development. For this reason the diffusion of the species present during this reaction (namely toluene and methylcyclohexane) is of great interest.
