Nanodiscs films at the air-water interface

DOI

Nanodiscs are self assembled complexes of phospholipids and a class of amphipathic helical proteins termed membrane scaffold proteins . The proteins and lipids self-assemble into structurally confined islands of lipids hold together by proteins rings, the aggregate having a diameter of ~10 nm. The nano discs hold great potential as containers for membrane proteins that could lead, in the long term, to new crystallisation methods for membrane proteins. The nano discs may also be used as building blocks for module assembly of artificial synthetic components with a specific biological function. Initial studies show that nanodiscs organize at interfaces (air-water or solid-water) such that surface sensitive scattering techniques can elucidate their structure. Specular and non-specular neutron reflectivity will provide invaluable information for the organization of nanodiscs at interfaces
