This proposal is part of a new research programme at Reading which is focused on a new types of macromolecular structures namely conetworks and pseudo-conetworks. These are polymer networks formed by linking two different types of polymer chains using asymmetric cross-linking units. We have specially prepared deuterium labelled conetwork systems in order to obtain quantitative small-angle neutron scattering data from these systems in the dry and swollen states. This will provide much needed information to identify and confirm the essential structural detail on these novel materials. Neutron scattering techniques are vital for these experiments in order to exploit the isotopic labelling to reveal the extent of phase separation and the scale of that separation as well as the size and shape of the component chains.
