The Swedish Mammography Cohort (SMC) is a large population-based cohort of over 60,000 women in the counties of Uppsala and Västmanland. All women born 1914-1948 who were residing in Västmanland and Uppsala County and in the years 1987-1990 received an invitation to participate in a mammography screening programme were asked to answer a questionnaire about diet and lifestyle. Approximately 66,000 women answered the questionnaire. In the autumn 1997, a second survey was sent to these women to update the information about their eating habits. Additional follow-ups were done 2008/2009 and 2019. The study examine associations of environmental/modifiable risk factors with several cancer sites (e.g., breast, colorectal, endometrium, ovary, and renal cell cancer), myocardial infarction, stroke, osteoporosis, cataracts, as well as death causes. The study has a longitudinal design, and to complement the update on exposure data record linkages to the nationwide Cancer Register, the In-Patient Register, and the Cause of Death Register and Population Register are also done. All members of the Swedish Mammography Cohort who had completed the 1987 food frequency questionnaire received a third questionnaire in 2008. The 2008 Health questionnaire collected information on general health status, disease diagnoses, current body weight, height, waist and hip circumferences, dental health, medication use, sleep habits, urine and bowel habits, family history of selected diseases, stress, and social support. Svenska mammografikohorten (SMC) är en omfattande populationsbaserad uppföljningsstudie med över 60 000 deltagande kvinnor i Västmanland och Uppsala län. Alla kvinnor födda 1914-1948 som var bosatta i Västmanland och Uppsala län och som under åren 1987-1990 fick en inbjudan till att delta i mammografiundersökning fick även en förfrågan om att besvara en enkät om kost och livsstil. Ungefär 66 000 kvinnor besvarade enkäten. Hösten 1997 skickades en andra enkät ut till dessa kvinnor för att uppdatera informationen om deras matvanor. Uppföljande enkäter har även skickats ut 2008/2009 och 2019. I studien undersöks samband mellan miljö/förändringsbara riskfaktorer och olika typer av cancer (t.ex. cancer i bröst, tarm, livmoder, äggstockar, njurar), hjärtinfarkt, stroke, benskörhet, grå starr, och andra dödsorsaker. Alla deltagare i Svenska Mammografikohorten som hade fyllt i 1987 års enkät om kost fick ett tredje och uppföljande frågeformulär 2008. 2008 års hälsoenkät samlade in information om allmänt hälsotillstånd, sjukdomsdiagnoser, aktuell kroppsvikt, längd, midje- och höftomkrets, tandhälsa, medicinanvändning, sömnvanor, urin- och tarmvanor, familjehistoria med utvalda sjukdomar, stress och socialt stöd. From 1987 to 1990, all women who lived in the Uppsala County of central Sweden and were born between 1914-1948 and all women who lived in the adjacent Västmanland County and were born between 1917-1948 received an invitation by mail to participate in a mammography screening program. Included in the mail was also an invitation to participate in this research study and a questionnaire to be answered and returned. Follow-ups have been performed approximately every tenth year starting in 1997. At next follow-up, 2008/2009, the questionnaire was extended and separated into two questionnaires. An additional follow-up was done during 2019.

Under åren 1987 till 1990 fick alla kvinnor födda 1914-1948 bosatta i Uppsala län och alla kvinnor födda 1917-1948 bosatta i Västmanlands län en inbjudan via brev till att delta i en mammografiundersökning. I utskicket fanns även en inbjudan till att delta i denna forskningsstudie samt en enkät att besvara och returnera. Uppföljning har gjorts med ca 10 års mellanrum med början 1997. Inför det andra uppföljningstillfälle utökades tidigare enkät och delades därför upp i två enkäter som skickades ut under 2008 och 2009. Ytterligare uppföljning har gjorts under 2019.
