Wave-induced mixing from finescale parameterization applied to Argo float data (2006-2015)

DOI

Global estimates of turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) dissipation rates epsilon (W/kg) and vertical diffusivity kappa (m^2/s), averaged in the three depth ranges 250-500 m, 500-1000 m and 1000-2000 m. The estimates are obtained by applying the finestructure method to vertical CTD profiles. Details about the methodology and analysis of the data can be found in Pollmann et al., 2017, „Evaluating the global internal wave model IDEMIX using finestructure methods" (J. Phys. Oc.; please cite this publication when using this data set). The estimates are binned into 1.5°x1.5° horizontal bins, defined such that epsilon(i,j) is the TKE dissipation rate representative of the bin bounded by lon(i),lon(i+1),lat(j),lat(j+1). The regional estimates around Hawaii are also depth dependent, with a vertical bin size of 100 m. Note the updated estimates based on Argo observations from 2006 to 2021, available under https://doi.org/10.1175/JPO-D-16-0204.1
